Talking about social media feels so apropos since social media was central to my husband’s birthday party. Yahoo has its Big Idea chair photo shoot. We hosted our Favorite Social Media Couch photo booth. The concept was to hold the pillow(s) of the social media that is more important for us between Twitter, Facebook and blogs.

No need to say that I am a part of the social media revolution. If you read this post, you probably are. Social media is not a fad. I recalled last January when we traveled to the United States and my husband told me to turn down the data roaming on your iPhone. What!!! A week without Twitter and my RSS reader on the go. Luckily for me, Rogers added a US data roaming plan the week before so I was able to tweet after all.

We stay connected and share photos with our friends through Facebook and Twitter. You probably noticed that you use less the phone. It is more efficient to send a tweet or a text message. Social media has changed the way we communicate. And I feel it is for the good. And due to social media, I met online and offline new like-minded people; some of which have become good friends.

I want to know which is your favorite social media site or tool?

Social Media Revolution Statistics

If you need data to convince the unconverted ones, look at this video. It highlights key statistics about the growth and the impacts of social media in our everyday life. No need to write them down, Geek in Disguise did it for us.

When I am telling that blogging and generating content opens doors I am not joking. In fact, in this case, I am because this is a well-done advertisement based on user generated content (UGC). Beware that I am an avid Formula 1 fan, I could watch the video again and again.

The Storyline

McLaren with their sponsor Vodofone posted on You Tube a video relating the extraordinary experience of two dedicated McLaren Formula 1 fans. It started as Steve and Simon wrote an application to convert their BlackBerry Storm phone into a car remote control. One weekend, they transformed the office in a big Grand-Prix circuit. It was brilliant idea for a do-it-yourself circuit. Imagine the look of your friends if you design a similar race track one weekend at home. They made you think their Grand-Prix video on You Tube caught the attention of a staff member at McLaren, which led to a private test session in Portugal with Lewis Hamilton. This is the way to grab my attention!

The storyline continues with McLaren taking extra steps to impress Steve and Simon. They hooked a remote control on an actual Formula 1 car. Lewis Hamilton, who enjoyed playing video games, used the remote control to drive the car across a small section of the circuit. How cool is that! It is a Cinderella story that for a while could make you dream.

This is effective because it is entertaining. It speaks to me as a Formula 1 fan. You wish it was true for these guys. Vodofone, this is a lot more effective that the 2-minute video where Lewis Hamilton tells us how he used his Blackberry Storm.

Who I Cheer For?

If you want to know, McLaren may be my favorite team but my favorite driver is Kimi Raikkonen. I admired the talents at Ferrari but I did not become a Ferrari’s fan even with Kimi in the red suit. Sound complicated, it is. Let’s hope Kimi learned from last year’s mistakes. I want him to be crowned World Champion for a second time. I am looking forward for the start of the Formula 1 season March 23, 2009.

We had another sign that social media and You Tube are not a fab. I am thrilled to see that social media are becoming a legitimate channel of communications in several parts of the World.

The Swedish Royal family announced on You Tube the upcoming wedding of the daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf, first in line to succeed to her father to be married to her long-time boyfriend, gym owner Daniel Westling.

Strangely, the Canadian Press news report does not mention it at all. They also failed to mention that rumors over the last 24 hours in the media fueled by bloggers lead to the crash of the Sweden Royal Family Web site.

I watched a show about US politics on CNN last Sunday morning. They were often soliciting people comments and referring to their friends as in Facebook friends. I am scare that the traditional Canadian news medias are so behind in social media. What do you think?

Two days ago I complained about not having enough girls in IT, so it seems natural to introduce a video podcast hosted by a geek girl. What is great about Cali Lewis’ Geek Brief show is that her tech content appeals to men and women.

GeekBrief.TV celebrated their third anniversary on December 23rd, 2008. Impressive! I purposely selected an episode where Cali talked about how they started. It is inspiring. She founded the show with her husband.

On a lighter note, they have been married now for 10 years. Like my husband, her husband Neil’s favorite drink is a Bombay Gin Martini. Except that my husband prefers his martini shaken with olives although he does not mind the lemon twist.

If you are a Mac fan, check out Geek Brief’s Macworld 2009 coverage of cool new products. Cali makes it fun. Remember that you can subscribe to their podcast on iTunes. Download the shows on your iPhone or iPod and watch the episodes whenever you have a few minutes of leisure.

Going back to our story, watch the episode where Cali Lewis explained how they got the idea to start a video PodCast at a time when it was not popular.

Then, watch the two following shows to get the full story.
GBTV #483 | GeekBrief.TV talks until the first 5 months after the launch
GBTV #484 | GeekBrief.TV tells what happened after they quit their day job

An Uncharted Territory for Us

There are only a handful of video podcasters in the women and moms blog community. Video is suited for many topics we covered. You do not have to start as sophisticated as this. But whatever you do, all podcasters will tell you to invest in a microphone as the micro on the digital video camera is not enough. If you wish to learn more, read their podcasting tips.

I will like to host my own video podcast show someday. The first step to be ready is to own your own .tv domain because this becomes your television channel. My answer to Gary Vaynerchuk’s Own your Television podcast is: I do!

The campaign of Barack Obama was an example on how politicians can use the Web to get support. Bloggers and the voters spread the word. The innovation in social media initiatives continue with Join the Wave. This was a somptaneaous idea from a cool Montreal company called Pixman Nomadic Media.

Pixman takes advantage of the momentum created by this historic event to get the words out about their technology. After all, Pixman provides nomadic media solutions to advertisers and help brands established virtual communities. The chairman of Pixman is Daniel Langlois, a man that is well-known for bringing multimedia innovative ideas. Pixman hired VDL2 three weeks ago to make their Web 2.0 idea a reality. I have friends that work at VDL2. It is impressive what you can accomplish in three weeks these days.

What is in it for you?

The World is ecstatic to the prospect of having Obama as the American President. On their site, you can read that Pixman let people from around the world connect to the first iconic figure of the 21st century: Barack Obama. On January 20th, 2009 United States will enter in a new era with the inauguration of Barack Obama as President. To celebrate your happiness, excitement, hopes and simply to congratulate the man, join the wave and post your home video.

If you are lucky, you can meet a Pixman cameraman in one of the 30 Worldwide cities. They will capture your 5-second video and link it to a globe map.
